Auckland Zinefest in collaboration with Alphabet City are very excited to announce that we are co-curating a "two day distro" aka zine corner at the upcoming AUT St Paul St Print Fair, held at Gallery 3.

It will be an event spanning one weekend only, and will both celebrate and display works from all facets of printing and related fields - so you can be sure that it will feature quality stuff worth checking out!

There is still time to get involved, though the deadline is soon so please check out the "events" tab on our website for more info.

Mini zine market at the upcoming First Thursdays!

Hey friends and zine-makers,

There is an upcoming opportunity at the next First Thursdays for you to sell your wares, if you so wish. There will be a mini zine market that we are currating in the La Gondola arcade, just outside Rebel Yell Gallery.

If you don't know about First Thursdays or haven't been to one yet, it is basically an evening around the K road area where some cool crafty/arty stuff gets put on (in the past there have been moveable art walls, face painting, craft market, dancing, music, DJs, etc etc). You can find the event on Facebook here or their website www.firstthursdays.co.nz

When we say mini market, we mean mini! There are very limited spaces available.

Cross Street Zine Library at First Thursdays

At the First Thursdays relaunch last week we carved out our own little space for the Cross Street Zine Library, which hasn't seen the light of day since Auckland Zinefest in August.

We themed it as a sort-of outdoors picnic style area (to make the space more inviting and comfortable), complete with patchwork tent, picnic blankets, and live soundscape provided by Stress Cadet. After all, this was in the Wine Cellar back alley area that kind-of resembles a bit of a concrete bunker (okay, it is pretty much a concrete bunker).

We had so much fun! Huge thank you's to everyone who came along and got involved and/or had a good time. Also thanks to Cleo and K Road Business Association for putting on the event.

Welly Zinefest was rad; bring on 2011!

Wellington Zinefest!

Just a few short weeks away, and we are super excited to see what this year will entail.

Wellington Zinefest 2010 comes from a slightly different angle to those of past years, with a heavy focus on being inclusive of all genres of self-published works – be them graphic novels, independent music or our regular (but beloved) fanzine.

Stall holders will be hailing from Auckland, Christchurch, Taranaki, New Plymouth, Tasman, Dunedin and Melbourne, with Vanessa Berry (Laughter and the Sound of Teacups) making up the international guests. Kerry Anne Lee (Help! My Snowman’s Burning!) will also be making a special appearance, and we're told that there will be at least two child participants (unconfirmed if Bryce’s super cute daughter will have another zine to purchase)… so be sure to anticipate a bit of a cute-fest as well.

Official sponsor of this year's event is once again the Wellington Cities Public Libraries - so if you make a zine but don't have a stall, be sure to take a copy along anyway cos they'll be sure to snap it up for their zine collection.

Zines of the Fest

We loved this one because it was so original, and pushed the boundaries of what a zine can encompass. The story line is a sort-of 'choose your own adventure' - so neat! Illustrations by Simon, and concept/direction by Ya Wen.

Second place:
Mythology of Self and Other Misconceptions
Hannah May
A5, 24 pages, colour cardstock cover and b/w printing

Featuring poems and illustrations by Hannah. We thought this one was simple, yet executed beautifully. Comes complete with ISBN too, which isn't something you see everyday!

Third place:
Craft-d - Issue 2
Beth Peters
A5, 40 pages, colour cover with b/w printing, and misc collected goodies in bag

Reading this zine you can tell that Beth has worked very hard on bringing out the second issue. It features interviews and articles by artists and craftspeople Beth meets in her daily life who inspire her. This issue also heavily features her love of collecting, with each issue coming with an assortment of ephemera she has collected over the years! Overall, this is a really satisfying package.

Last year's winners Heather and Zac from the WaterBear Appreciation Society have really stepped up again with their work! We loved the cute illustrations, and how it evoked memories of collecting cards as a child (okay, some of us were geeks) - and subverts the idea of superheroes or celebrities with that of everyday buskers from Wellington.

Elam Graduate Catalogue (Reworked at Auckland Zinefest 2009)
Dane Taylor
A5, 28 pages, b/w print.

A product of a workshop held at last year's Zinefest, co-ordinated by Dane as part of an ongoing subversive publication workshop project. Participants were given copies of various Elam graduate catalogues and asked to choose an image that appealed or otherwise interested them, and change/add/subvert it. What features is an extensive catalogue of thoroughly different collages/mixed media art.

Thanks to everyone who entered the competition! We were amazed with how popular it was. To everyone who entered - your zines have been donated to the Cross Street Zine Library. If you would like them back then message us and we can arrange something.

Aftermath!

Hey friends,

A bit belated, but a post-zinefest update from us nonetheless. If you made it along last Saturday to the Wine Cellar and St Kevins Arcade, thank you for coming! We hope you had a good time; it seems the whole day was buzzing with excitement and networking and lots of zine-loving.

We've been pretty overwhelmed with the response we've had so far - everyone has been so supportive and positive, it's been really heart-warming to be a part of. So, again, sincere thanks from all of us.

If you would like to let us know what you thought of the event (good or bad - we encourage honest critique), you can fill out a confidential feedback form here.

We wouldn't have been able to put on Zinefest without the generous support of people such as super-hero K Road Business Association precinct manager Barbara Holloway (and the team), Peter from Alleluya Cafe (who lent us the space for the day), and Wine Cellar owner Rohan Evans. Not to mention all of the amazing volunteers who helped us leading up to, during, and after the event!

We managed to get a whole bunch of video footage from both the day event and after party, so we will keep you posted for when that is ready to be viewed.

The 'Zine of the Fest Award' was awarded to Ya-Wen Ho and Simon Fletcher (pictured above with the trophy, cake, and Tes) for their zine which can be viewed here.

Many of the stall holders at this year's Zinefest will be selling brand-new issues of their zines, or even completely new zines. Below we feature a few of them - but be sure to come and check out all the talent on the day, as we would be writing forever about all the amazing people who are involved this year!

Radio As Paper #5

"Radio as Paper is a local comic zine and winner of an Eric Award for best comic anthology (NZ comics award) RAP compiles works from NZ comic creators such as Tim Molloy, Toby Morris, MF Joyce, Frank and Becky and many more.

After getting a much appreciated boost from last years Auckland Zinefest and now working on the 5th issue, RAP returns this year to Zinefest with a possible best off of the previous editions as most of the first issues are now out of stock."

Also, at Zinefest only, if you buy a physical copy you also get a digital copy (issue 4 or 5) for free! Just bring a USB stick or similar on the day.

Pig pt 1

Jerome will be releasing the first part of his comic entitled 'Bucklame', which has taken over a year to make. If you purchased the intro off him last year, bring it along to Zinefest and he will swap you for the new one, free of charge! Pretty sweet deal in our books.

Presence Magazine #7

Issue 7 of Presence is jammed packed with loads of interesting and quirky content.

"We get up close and personal with The Drab Doo Riffs, as they pose for a mysterious shoot. The girls from The Gladeyes, have a chat with us and stop by for some messy fun. Then we venture behind the scenes at Pleased To Meet You boutique, where Misery meets fashion. All the girls are going to crush on Jordan Barnes, a man with too many talents, whose works are featured in this issue. Potroast #6

"Potroast n. 1 A cut of beef, often taken from the tougher chuck cut, that is browned and then cooked until tender in a covered pot with vegetables. 2 An Auckland-based literary zine publishing poetry, short-fiction and illustrations by an interesting group of contributors. The zine strives for the same qualities of flavour, richness and budget-stretching-without-quality-compromise substance as its culinary namesake. 3 Awesomeness.

Potroast#6, our latest issue, is garden-themed. Thus, Potroast#6 features gardens in which growth is consumption (of human flesh!); gardens in which nothing grows; gardens growing on heads; heads which are gardens complete with oozing spring-bud pimples; and a wide spectrum of other works dealing with growth, stagnation and the flowering of many beautiful things.

Copies of Potroast#6 - as well as back issues #3, #4 and #5 - will be available at the Auckland Zinefest for $4 each or $10 for 3 copies. All funds raised will contribute towards printing costs. Chapbooks of some of our regular contributors will also be at the Festival!"

Cupcake Monsters #11

"At this year's Zinefest, I will be releasing issue 11 of Cupcakemonsters, which features

interviews with Brooklyn's Oneohtrix Point Never and Jeffrey Lewis, along with a

downloadable mixtape of select Papaiti Records bootlegs, curated by James Stuteley.

As always, this latest issue also features many intelligent looking photographs of

bands I consider to be good. A runner-up for last year's "Zine of the Fest" award,

Cupcakemonsters continually talks about avant-garde music in a pleasant manner."

"Bad Crushes is a collaborative zine made by a bunch of soft gummy hearted souls. An A-Z of good times, bad ideas and unrequited "I like you"s."

Health Wealth and Happiness #1

An aesthetic amalgamation of collaged treasures/ephemera and artwork sourced and found around Auckland. Issue 1 features work and found objects by Dim Pivac, Moron Says What?, Micheal Vincent Sperring, Jonas Besson, Genista Jurgens, Joshua Lynn, Tessa Stubbing and Damian Golfinopoulous. There will be copies of HWAH at Zinefest for free - if you miss out you can download it from the website shortly.

10-22-38 Astoria #3

10-22-38 Astoria was named in homage to the first ever photocopy, by Chester Carlson in 1938, which said just that.

Limited copies of the third edition will be available at Zinefest this year. Issue 3 is a step aside from the previous two editions (which involved more traditional zine content, articles etc), and is a more conceptual version - it has been produced entirely on the photocopier, using 1960s photocopier manuals as the raw material to collage, destroy and play with. What is contained in the zine is an aesthetic experience - a visual representation of the beauty the limitations of a photocopier offer the zine-maker.

An update on some stuff happening at Zinefest!

Frances from The Pillbox has given us a limited number of the arts and culture zine from Omaru to give away for free at Zinefest! Get there early to get your hands on a copy. For those of you who like to sleep in on a Saturday and who might get there a little late, never fear cos she has also donated some to the Cross Street Zine Library which will be on display during the day event!

Here is a little description of the zine, in Frances' words:

"Events. Rants. Reviews. Poetry. Short stories. Illustrations. Photography. The Pillbox a monthly Oamaru based arts and creative culture zine."

Carmen from *INK is another lovely someone who has donated us a bunch of her zines for Zinefest. *INK is Dunedin's weekly gig guide which features art and cool stuff from local artists, so make sure you come and check it out also. We will have a selection from the zine's 12 year history, so it will be an interesting read!

And a bit about *INK, in Carmen's words:

"*INK is Dunedin's weekly Entertainment Guide/Zine. *INK is is that thing you see hanging out of people's back pockets. Jam packed full of love and creative peeps. ♥"

And Kylee who teaches at Auckland Girl's Grammar School will also be bringing a selection of zines made by girls in her class, which will be on display in the Zine Library as well.

And a tiny bit from Kylee:

"The zines they are creating are looking at Social Media. The grrls have picked different aspects of Social Media and are researching and creating over the next two weeks. There is also a potential teacher's zine that I could bring along!"

So exciting! Can't wait to read all of the new zines that will be out in time for Zinefest.

Auckland Zinefest - back for a second edition.

Auckland zine makers, zine lovers, and DIY self publishers can get together for a free event we hope to be bigger and better than last year's! Featuring a whole bunch of fresh talent, as well as the return of zine veterans too.

Featuring a zine market upstairs in St Kevins Arcade, and free workshops and talks downstairs in Wine Cellar, throughout the day.

Talks by long-time zine maker from Wellington Bryce Galloway of Incredibly Hot Sex With Hideous People fame "Zines, Scenes, and the Economy of Means"; and Richard Cooke who will be comparing/contrasting his work with both underground zines and commercial magazines.

Also featuring a paper making workshop by Tes Clark from Cross Street Studios; "Fan Letters to Fan Zines" workshop with Tessa Stubbing; and Steven Lyons will be presenting a workshop on "Collaborative Creation and Improvisation."

There will also be a collaborative zine-making workshop throughout the day, screen-printing facilities, the Cross Street Zine Library on display, as well as "Zine of the Fest" award to be announced on the day.

Come and get creative!

Gosh, it's been a long time coming, eh? Sorry about that! They are up online now - you can check out our Flickr or Facebook group for the pics (feel free to tag yourself or your friends on Facebook).

Also, we've been scanning the pages from the collaborative zine made at the 'Zinefest vs Mum' night at Cassette. Thanks everyone who came along and contributed! We hope you had fun. Images will be uploaded shortly (along with photos from the night) - watch this space!

Don't forget we are just days away from the cut-off date for Zinefest 2010 applications. Don't forget to submit your application before the end of this month to ensure your spot! Applications received after May 31st will still be accepted, but will remain as back-up applications.

Lastly, we have another stall at the Cassette 'Super Markets', Saturday June 5th. We'll be selling zines and misc cool stuff from our friends, as well as spreading the good word about Zinefest. If you're round you should come say hi! We think there will be free beer again...

Long time since you've heard from us, we know! Just to let you know what we've been up to, and what is in store for Auckland Zinefest this year.

First up, call for involvement goes out Saturday 1st of May. Application deadline will be by the 31st of May. Late applications will be kept on file as backups - please don't hold this against us as we are busy people and trying to make the day as smooth as.

The application form will be posted up this weekend, but feel free to email us if you have any enquiries.

Secondly, we will be having a little stall at the Cassette Markets this Saturday! We will be selling zines from our friends, as well as spreading the good word (re: call for involvement) and having application forms on hand.

Feel free to come along and chew our ears if you have any questions etc or feel like chats. There will be lots of cool things and entertainment - we even hear there will be a BBQ out on the deck!

Thirdly, we are organising a night at Cassette. It will be called 'Zinefest vs Mum' - "Mum" being the Friday night club night they have there. There will be bands and entertainment, as well as a VIP section with zine-workshop facilities.

Basically this will be a party-night, where you can come and mingle/party/make stuff with like minded people... if you would like to be on the doorlist (we would like you and all your mates to be on the doorlist, so tell us their names too), send us an email with "Zinefest vs Mum" as the header, and your crew list inside.

The first 50 people through the door after 9pm get a free Kirin beer, and the first 30-or-so people to complete a page for the collaborative zine will receive a free drink ticket also. Whee!

DHDFDS and Ghost Wave confirmed for the event so far.

And lastly... dates and venues confirmed for Auckland Zinefest 2010! August 14th, 2010: Day event (featuring workshops, talks, stalls and more) will be held at Wine Cellar and St Kevins Arcade, K Rd. After party featuring bands, party times and mystery cool shit will be at Wine Cellar and Whammy! Keep them in your diary.

We're super keen to play in the little city and catch up with our new friends from Welly we met at Auckland Zinefest! You should definitely come along, say hi, hang out. Potentially we might be a part of a talk on artist run spaces too, exciting.

We will be selling zines from members of the Cross Street collective and friends, AK Zinefest merch, as well as many more surprises.

Our good friends down in welly town are holding Zinefest this year. You should check it out, it's gonna be AMAZING and in a bar even. Woah. Anyways you might see us there (at least some of the Cross Street Crew will be headed that way, even for a looksee), hopefully giving a talk or workshop. Details TBC.

Feedback on AK Zinefest 2009

A few excerpts from feedback submitted to us by stallholders this year.

"It was very inspirational to meet other equally motivated people with similar interests and talk shop about zines – from production issues to readership to the content being published – and all this knowledge will become very useful later.Overall, I would say that Auckland Zinefest 2009 was: Fantastic! A great people meeting opportunity!"

"The workshop and talks area was so well set up, I thought it all worked really well in that space and was a non-threatening environment for people to get involved."

"A++. Really good vibe, everyone was so supportive and friendly of each other. Beautiful!"

"Bryce Galloway will talk about his experiences making the long running and regular-as-laxitive zine Incredibly Hot Sex with Hideous People, now in its 34th issue. The zine is a Wellington based quarterly, free from Cuba Street at time of issue. Galloway - 43, NZ male and balding - takes to the perzine genre, usually the territory of North American teenage girls."

Featuring footage of the Portland Zine Symposium, a zine bicycle tour of Portland, and activities bringing zine culture to life."

Zines as Freedom of Expression

"I’ve heard that there was once a time when the only way you could find out about anything exciting was by reading a Xeroxed piece of paper someone had stolen from a squat. I may not have been alive back then but, in that pre-blog age, zines formed a central and essential part of many artisitic cultures outside the mainstream. From Hip- Hop’s ‘factsheets’ to the photocopied diaries of romantic Goths, zines were the communicative medium without which those communities could not have survived.

But why bother with them now? In an age where a paralysing quantity of information about new music and art, the traditional staples of zinedom, is available on the internet, what role can zines still play? I believe the unique qualities which define zines; their non-profit status, their limited communities of interest, passionate creators and freedom from advertiser pressure make them an ideal vehicle for cultural communication. My talk will share my thoughts about those points and hopefully explain why I think zines are freedom of expression at its most simple and honest."

If you were unfortunate enough to miss the cut off date, but would still like to have a stall, there is the option to be put on the waiting list in case another stall holder pulls out. Please email us for more info.

Call For Involvement!

Hey guys! If you would like to run a stall or workshop, give a talk or just be awesome and help out on the day, we would love to hear from you.

Zinefest will be held at Cross Street Studios, Newton, AK on Saturday the 15th of August. Applications close on Friday the 3rd of July.

We accept applications in the form of email to akzinefest@gmail.com

Afterparty for all the good folk who attend and help out to be announced. Watch this space.

Please note!
Stall holders:
You can book either a half-table or full table stall. Full tables are $10, half tables $5. Easy.
You will be required to pack in before Zinefest begins at 12 noon, and pack out after 5pm on the day.
With your application, please include a small statement describing the nature of your zine(s) or comic(s), any prior gatherings you have been involved with, and any related info you think we might find useful.
Due to the limited number of stalls available, please don't be offended if we are unable to accommodate your request.

Workshop holders and Talkers:
We would prefer it if you could give us a run-down on what your workshop will entail at the very latest one month prior to Zinefest, for advertising purposes.
Also if you need materials or hand-outs then talk to us and we can see what we can arrange, but keep in mind that we may not be able to provide everything you need.
NB if you are also a stall holder then your workshop or talk can be used as payment for your stall.

General good people who want to help out:
Please let us know what area you would like to help us out in (ie: postering, photocopying, advertising, setting up on the day, word of mouth, etc etc) so that we can put you to best use!!

If for any reason you cannot follow through with a stall, talk or workshop, please let us know at the latest one month in advance, so we can try and arrange something to replace you.
